There is great news for Georgia charter schools on the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The NAEP, also known as the 鈥渘ation鈥檚 report card,鈥� is the largest national assessment given to U.S. students in various subject areas. On the 2019 NAEP, Georgia charter fourth-grade students outperformed their traditional school peers by 13 points in math and 19 points in reading. Georgia鈥檚 charter eighth graders received a math score that was 16 points above traditional students and a reading score that was 15 points higher. Georgia鈥檚 African-American students scored higher than their traditional African-American peers in fourth-grade math (18 points), fourth-grade reading (21 points), eighth-grade math (20 points) and eighth-grade reading (20 points).
Another bright spot on the national assessment was in the city of Atlanta. African-American charter school students in the city of Atlanta significantly outperformed black traditional school students. African-American fourth-grade charter school students scored 19 points higher in math and 27 points higher in reading. Meanwhile, the city鈥檚 eighth-grade African-American charter school students outperformed their traditional peers by 20 points in both math and reading.
