Georgia Students Outperform on the 2019 NAEP

There is great news for Georgia charter schools on the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The NAEP, also known as the “nation’s report card,” is the largest national assessment given to U.S. students in various subject areas. On the 2019 NAEP, Georgia charter fourth-grade students outperformed their traditional school peers by 13 points in math and 19 points in reading. Georgia’s charter eighth graders received a math score that was 16 points above traditional students and a reading score that was 15 points higher. Georgia’s African-American students scored higher than their traditional African-American peers in fourth-grade math (18 points), fourth-grade reading (21 points), eighth-grade math (20 points) and eighth-grade reading (20 points).

Another bright spot on the national assessment was in the city of Atlanta. African-American charter school students in the city of Atlanta significantly outperformed black traditional school students. African-American fourth-grade charter school students scored 19 points higher in math and 27 points higher in reading. Meanwhile, the city’s eighth-grade African-American charter school students outperformed their traditional peers by 20 points in both math and reading.
