There is a lot of momentum surrounding the charter school movement in Georgia. With so much growth in the region, there is an increasing need for high-quality schools. Enrollment in charter schools in Georgia has more than tripled over the last decade, exceeding 84,000 students in the 2016-17 school year (Georgia Department of Education). EdTec is eager to contribute to this growth by sharing our knowledge and expertise and expanding our impact in the state.

Amana Academy recently entered into a partnership with ATL Urban Farms. The unique partnership allows Amana Academy students to become urban farmers and produce food for the school and local charities. ATL Urban Farms is a Georgia-based producer of seedlings for Tower Garden©, an eco-friendly vertical garden made out food grade plastic. The garden technology uses 90 percent less space and grows plants more quickly.

On Friday, Nov. 3, 100 teachers, staff, parents and community members worked to build a KaBOOM! Playground at The Main Street Academy. 200 volunteers from Cox Enterprises also assisted with the creation of an outdoor play area. In addition to the new playground equipment, volunteers built an outdoor classroom, a music wall, picnic tables, trellis benches and an outdoor bowling alley. 

On Thursday, October 19, members of the Georgia Charter Schools Association’s Board of Governance gathered at The Garage in Atlanta’s West End for a board governance orientation meeting. The Garage is the newest location for Monday Night Brewing, which was co-founded by CEO Jeff Heck, the husband of 91³Ô¹Ï Board Vice Chair Hannah Heck.

Resurgence Hall Charter School in College Park has only been open for a few months, but Kindergartners at the charter school are already making noticeable progress in reading. In August, Kindergartners took the Strategic Teaching and Evaluation of Progress (STEP) literacy assessment. In October, Kindergartners were retested. 70 percent the students grew by one reading level and 30 percent grew by two or more levels.

Oglethorpe Charter School Teacher Nicole Wofford Dillon has been selected as a finalist for Savannah-Chatham 2019 Teacher of the Year award. Dillon currently teaches English Language Arts at Oglethorpe and has worked at the Savannah charter school for four years.
