by Georgia Charter Schools Association
It was a thrilling week for charter school news as Georgia’s 2015 Legislative session opened with strong commitment from Governor Deal, in both the inaugural and State-of-the-State addresses, that education reform will be at the top of his agenda. He proposes a constitutional amendment to allow for state-run “Opportunity School Districts” to turn around failing schools in Georgia. The Governor went out of his way in remarks to single out the opportunities provided by high quality charter schools as alternatives to failing public schools that consign students to failure. And he fulfilled his campaign promise to students at Utopian Academy for the Arts charter school, who sang “Georgia on My Mind” at the Inauguration.
