Charter Capacity Interview Readiness Institute Registration Notes

We’re excited to invite you to register for the upcoming Charter Capacity Interview Readiness Institute–a critical, full-day experience designed to prepare your team for upcoming capacity interviews. Here are some notes to keep in mind:

Important Registration Note

You can register multiple members of your team at one time through the Eventbrite link. We strongly encourage you to do so to ensure your full team is accounted for.

泭Full Team Participation Matters

It is critical that you have strong representation from your founding board and leadership team in attendance.

This Institute is intentionally designed for teams to:

  • Practice and respond to mock capacity interview questions
  • Build alignment across board members and leadership
  • Strengthen clarity around roles, decisions, and execution

The capacity interview is not an individual exercise. It is a board-based demonstration of readiness, and your preparation should reflect that.

Strong Charter Expert Partners Are Already Stepping In to Support You

We already have a strong group of experienced charter leaders and subject-matter experts who have committed to supporting this day.

These partners bring deep expertise across:

  • Academics and instructional design
  • Governance and board development
  • Finance and sustainability
  • Operations and school launch
  • Special populations and student support

More importantly, they are not just attending. They are coming prepared to work directly with your team, provide honest, candid feedback, and help you strengthen your responses and overall readiness.

This is a unique opportunity to engage with individuals who understand both the authorizer expectations and the realities of operating a charter school.

What Makes This Day Valuable

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Engage in small-group sessions with these experts
  • Practice real capacity interview questions
  • Receive direct, actionable feedback
  • Strengthen your own understanding and knowledge going into the capacity interview

This is not a passive training. It is a working session designed to provide in-depth coaching and support that will directly impact your readiness.

How to Prepare (Pre-Work)

To maximize your time and get the most out of the Institute, please come prepared to actively engage:

  • Review your full petition as a team, ensuring all members have a high-level understanding of each section
  • Be prepared to clearly explain:
    • Your academic model
    • Your governance structure and board roles
    • Your financial plan and key assumptions
  • Identify 23 areas where your team feels least confident
  • Practice answering at least 23 potential interview questions as a team prior to attending

The more aligned and prepared your team is coming in, the more targeted and impactful your experience will be.

What to Bring

To get the most out of the day, please come prepared with:

  • Your most recent draft of your charter petition (digital or printed) all members should have access to the more recent draft of the petition
  • If you have been denied by the local board of education, all members should have a copy of the denial letter and understand how the board has responded to the feedback in the denial letter
  • Key documents or notes related to your:
    • Academic program
    • Budget and financial plan
    • Governance structure
  • A note-taking device (laptop, notebook, tablet) for capturing real-time revisions and reflections
  • A fully engaged mindset and readiness to participate as a team

If you haven’t already, you can register for the upcoming Charter Capacity Interview Readiness Institute here.

2026 Legislative Session Wrap-Up:泭Charter泭School泭Update

The Georgia General Assembly concluded the 2026 legislative session on Tuesday, April 2. The session included several notable wins for泭charter泭schools, along with a few legislative challenges, despite sustained advocacy efforts. Below are key highlights and areas where progress fell short.

Wins:

Senate Bill 369 (HB 1257 Provisions)

SB 82 Cleanup
泭contains language, drafted by the State泭Charter泭Schools泭Commission. The legislation builds on SB 82 and strengthens the framework for rulemaking and incentive grants. Senate Bill 82, which passed during the 2025 legislative session, addresses the states泭charter泭school泭access issue by incentivizing local泭school泭districts to approve more泭charter泭schools泭and holding districts accountable if they repeatedly deny high-quality泭charter泭petitions.

Drop-out Recovery泭Schools Provision
Adds a new definition for泭completion charter schools, recognizing them as泭schools泭specifically designed to serve students who are off-track for graduation or need alternative pathways.泭

Creates a tailored framework of rules and standards for these泭schools, rather than holding them to the exact same model as traditional泭charter泭schools.泭

Allows existing泭charter泭schools泭to convert into泭completion charter schools泭if they choose to focus on this student population.泭

Establishes separate performance expectations, acknowledging that success metrics for re-engaging and graduating at-risk students should differ from traditional academic benchmarks.

Multi-School泭Governance Provision
The bill includes a provision to create a scalable泭charter泭school泭governance model, by allowing the same governing board to oversee both the nonprofit organization and the泭school. This legislation enables a centralized structure that can extend across multiple campuses. Instead of building a brand-new board for every泭school, an organization can replicate its model under one aligned governing bodymaking expansion faster and more consistent. The bill signals thoughtful growth of proven models, which can attract strong organizations to invest and expand in Georgia.

Virtual泭School泭Athletic Participation
The legislation泭allows virtual泭school泭students to participate in athletics at their zoned brick-and-mortar泭schools. This language was originally part of泭泭sponsored by Rep. Robert Flournoy.

Losses:

Senate Bill 498
, sponsored by Sen. Clint Dixon, was championed by 91勛圖 and would have created the Georgia泭Charter泭School泭Facilities Authority to help泭charter泭schools泭address significant challenges in financing facilities by supporting construction and renovation projects through revolving loans and other funding. The bill passed the Senate, cleared the House Education Committee, and was approved by the full House after its language was added to泭. It then required a final agree vote from the Senate to reach final passage. Despite support in both chambers, time ran out on the final day of the session.

House Bill 1308
,泭sponsored by Rep. Debra Silcox, would have improved泭charter泭school泭access to unused district-owned facilities.

Senate bill 475
,泭sponsored by Sen. RaShaun Kemp, promoted fair treatment of泭charter泭schools泭in ESPLOST (Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) awards.

As always, we’re grateful to our member泭schools, and we will continue to keep you informed about any future developments or advocacy efforts.
